Water Testing & Drinking Water Analysis

Professional Water Testing for Tank, Bore and Rural Water Supplies

If your home, farm or business relies on rainwater, tank water, bore water or another private water supply, regular water testing is the only way to know what you're drinking.

At WTS we provide comprehensive drinking water testing and analysis throughout the Waikato and surrounding regions. Our laboratory testing identifies bacteria, minerals, metals and other contaminants that may affect the safety, taste, appearance and quality of your water.

All testing is performed by an accredited New Zealand laboratory, with results reviewed against current New Zealand Drinking Water Standards.

Why Test Your Water?

Clear water does not always mean safe water.

Contaminants can enter your water supply through:

  • Bird and animal droppings on roofs and catchment areas

  • Sediment build-up inside water tanks

  • Surface water contamination

  • Agricultural runoff

  • Corroded pipework and fittings

  • Naturally occurring minerals and metals in groundwater

Without testing, many of these issues remain undetected.

Water testing helps protect your family's health, ensures your treatment system is performing correctly, and identifies problems before they become costly.

What Can Water Testing Detect?
Microbiological Testing

Microbiological testing checks for harmful bacteria and indicators of contamination, including:

  • E. coli

  • Total Coliforms

  • Faecal Coliforms

The presence of these organisms may indicate contamination from animal or bird waste and suggests other disease-causing pathogens could also be present.

Chemical & Mineral Analysis

Our potable water testing assesses a wide range of chemical and mineral parameters including:

  • pH

  • Hardness

  • Alkalinity

  • Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

  • Nitrates

  • Chlorides

  • Sulphates

  • Sodium

  • Calcium

  • Magnesium

Testing can identify issues that affect water taste, corrosion, scaling and overall water quality.

Metals Testing

We also test for metals commonly found in private water supplies, including:

  • Iron

  • Manganese

  • Copper

  • Lead

  • Zinc

  • Arsenic

  • Boron

Elevated levels of certain metals can affect both water quality and long-term health outcomes.

Physical Water Quality Testing

Physical characteristics are also measured, including:

  • Turbidity (water clarity)

  • Electrical Conductivity

  • Dissolved Solids

These tests help identify sediment, suspended particles and overall water condition.

How the Testing Process Works
1. Sample Collection

A member of our team visits your property to collect water samples using approved procedures.

Samples are personally delivered to an accredited New Zealand laboratory for testing by trained microbiologists and water quality specialists.

3. Detailed Report

Results are typically returned within 7–10 working days and include:

  • Comparison against drinking water standards

  • Recommendations for treatment or corrective action where required

4. Expert Advice

If any issues are identified, our team can recommend practical solutions such as:

  • UV disinfection systems

  • Sediment filtration

  • Iron and manganese removal

  • pH correction

  • Tank cleaning

  • Water treatment upgrades

Who Should Test Their Water?

We recommend water testing for:

  • Rainwater tank owners

  • Rural properties

  • Bore water users

  • Rural and lifestyle new home builds

  • Property purchases

  • Landlords and rental properties

  • Childcare centres and schools

  • Lifestyle blocks and farms

  • Commercial premises using private water supplies

Testing is particularly important if you have noticed changes in taste, smell, colour or water clarity, or if you are concerned your water treatment system may not be sufficient for your requirements.

Meeting New Zealand Drinking Water Standards

Private water supplies are not routinely monitored like town water supplies. Property owners are responsible for ensuring their drinking water is safe.

Our testing helps homeowners, builders, landlords and property managers understand whether their water supply meets New Zealand drinking water requirements and what improvements may be needed.
