What Is a UV Whole House Water Filter?
A UV whole house filtration system treats all the water entering your home before it reaches your taps, showers, toilets and appliances.

Most systems include several stages of treatment, with each filter performing a specific job before the water reaches the UV steriliser.
How Does a Multi-Stage Filtration System Work?
Each filter cartridge has a specific purpose. Together, they remove sediment, improve water quality and ensure the UV system can effectively disinfect your water. Most domestic systems offer 2 or 3 stage cartridge filtration prior to UV Sterilisation.
Stage 1: Polypleat Sediment Filter
The first stage (In three stage cartridge systems*) is typically a Polypleat sediment filter.
Polypleat cartridges are washable and reusable, making them ideal as the first line of defence where water contains larger amounts of sediment.
They remove:
Sand
Silt
Rust particles
Leaves and organic debris
Insects
Tank sediment
By removing larger particles first, the Polypleat filter helps protect the finer filters further down the line, extending their lifespan and maintaining good water flow.
*A 2 stage cartridge systems may choose to exclude either polypleat filtration OR carbon filtration, depending on the individual water profile (e.g., heavy sediment vs odour/taste considerations).
Stage 2: Polyspun Sediment Filter
After the larger particles have been removed, the water passes through a Polyspun filter.
These depth filters capture much finer particles that may still be suspended in the water.
A Polyspun filter removes:
Fine sediment
Dirt
Very small suspended particles
Residual organic matter
This stage is particularly important because UV light can only effectively disinfect clear water. Fine particles can shield bacteria and other microorganisms from the UV light, reducing the effectiveness of the system.
**It is an important consideration that the system MUST include either a 1 micron Polyspun Filter or a 1 Micron Carbon Filter to ensure sufficient sedimentary filtration for effective UV light penetration
Stage 3: Activated Carbon Filter
The final filtration stage before UV treatment is usually an Activated Carbon filter (In three stage cartridge systems*).
Activated carbon improves both the quality and taste of your water by reducing:
Unpleasant tastes
Odours
Chlorine (where present)
Organic compounds
Some agricultural chemicals
It also helps produce cleaner, clearer water before it enters the UV chamber.

The Final Stage: UV Sterilisation
Once the water has been filtered, it passes through the UV chamber.
Inside is a high-intensity ultraviolet lamp that destroys harmful microorganisms by disrupting their DNA, preventing them from reproducing.
UV treatment is highly effective against organisms such as:
E. coli
Campylobacter
Giardia
Cryptosporidium
Salmonella
Many viruses
Other harmful bacteria
Unlike chemical disinfection, UV treatment:
Adds no chemicals to your water
Doesn't alter taste or odour
Leaves no residual chemicals
Works continuously whenever water flows through the system
Is environmentally friendly
For UV treatment to work properly, the water must first be clear, making good pre-filtration essential.

Over time, filter cartridges become loaded with sediment and organic matter. Left unchanged, they can:

Recommended Maintenance Schedule
The ideal servicing interval depends on your water quality and household water usage. As a general guide:
Every 6–12 Months
Replace:
Polypleat filter (or clean if appropriate, replacing when worn)
Polyspun filter
Activated Carbon filter
Properties with high sediment levels or heavy water usage may require more frequent cartridge replacement.
Every 12 Months
Replace the UV lamp.
Although the lamp may still be glowing, its germicidal output gradually decreases over time. After approximately 12 months of continuous use, it may no longer provide the level of disinfection required to properly protect your water supply.
Annual replacement ensures your system continues operating safely.
During Annual Servicing
A professional service should also include:
Cleaning the quartz sleeve surrounding the UV lamp
Inspecting O-rings and seals
Checking housings for leaks or wear
Confirming the UV system is operating correctly
Preventative maintenance helps maximise both system performance and component life.
